Wasco gears up for Memorial Day celebration

Community members are hard at work preparing for the annual Wasco Memorial Day celebration, a long-running tradition for the town.

The festivities kick off Monday, May 27, with a Country Breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Wasco School Events Center. A Memorial Service will follow at 10 a.m. downtown at the Wasco Train Depot, with a parade planned for 11 a.m.

An Oregon Air National Guard military jet flyover also is planned, subject to availability.

The event features a classic car show, artisans market and children's activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., pastry auction at 12:30 p.m. and raffle at 1 p.m. The raffle grand prize is a three-night stay at a cabin in the heart of Wallowa Lake, and tickets will be sold right up until the drawing.

Food will be available from the Wasco Market, Paradise Rose Chuckwagon, Tygh Shaved Ice and The Dirty Cowgirl Saloon. The Dirty Cowgirl will have its beergarden open for parade viewing by 10 a.m., and live music with Cheyenne West is set for 2 p.m.

Wasco Mayor Beth McCurdy said she's especially grateful for the hard work of city staff and volunteers and the crew from Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce for making the event such a huge success.

"This is a big day for our little town, and we're all looking forward to another fantastic Wasco Memorial Day celebration," McCurdy said.
