Sherman Kids Zone received a high honor last weekend at a town hall for Sen. Jeff Merkley in Rufus.
Board members attended the town hall to accept a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol in recognition of their hard work and dedication to the nonprofit organization.
Sherman Kids Zone was launched in spring 2021 by a small group of parents who hoped to create a free indoor play space for children and families. Three years later, the organization is deemed a remarkable success across Sherman County.
The organization was nominated for the honor by Sherman County Judge Joe Dabulskis.
"Nobody is more deserving of any award than are parents. And when a group of parents get together to create something wonderful for all kids of a community - that is exceptional," Dabulskis said. "Thank you to the moms and dads who made this happen."
Located upstairs at the Wasco School Events Center, Sherman Kids Zone occupies a former classroom space in the old grade school. They offer a range of toys and activities for children ages 2 to 12, including a play kitchen, doctor's office and magnetic chalkboard wall.
The Kids Zone expanded in spring 2023 into the room next door to add a Game Room space for older kids and their families, which features a ping pong table, foosball, Legos, numerous puzzles and games, and their latest addition - a giant Lite Brite wall.
The organization also offers regular activities throughout the week; hosts holiday parties and seasonal events; and sponsors booths and activities at annual events across the county, including Wasco Memorial Day and Sherman County Harvest Fest.
Sherman Kids Zone is entirely grant-funded and led by parents and volunteers, which allows it to continue to offer free membership for the community.
Board chair Becky Brandenburg accepted the award on behalf of the organization at Saturday's town hall.
"Sherman Kids Zone was honored to be recognized as an organization that has gone above and beyond to meet community needs," Brandenburg said. "We are so proud of our organization and where it has come over the last few years by its dedicated volunteers."
