LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Leah Watkins

When I joined the Gilliam County Court in 2023, one of our first tasks was to review the 2021-2026 Strategic Plan. The plan was updated to have an emphasis on Housing, Broadband, and Childcare.

We have worked diligently to make strides in these areas in many ways including hiring a broadband consultant to guide us through the grant process, established an endowment fund to support childcare as part of the Waste Management Host Fee Ordinance, and provided funding for several housing projects through the Competitive Grant Program.

Some additional wins we have had is successfully negotiating a PILOT agreement with Avangrid for the Oregon Trail Solar Project that provided a community service fee to Gilliam SWCD and Port of Arlington and brought Public Health back to Gilliam County to provide better services to county citizens. Currently, we are in discussions with the Gilliam County Road Advisory Committee and the Columbia Ridge Advisory Committee about relocating a portion of Cedar Springs Lane near Waste Management affected by train crossings.

It is important to keep focus on these projects and not lose momentum on them.

I am passionate about the work done at Gilliam County and seeing it continue. I am running for Gilliam County Judge to focus on the future of our county and work on issues important to its citizens.

As the election moves forward, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if there are things you would like to discuss. I look forward to focusing on the future of Gilliam County.

Thank you,

Leah Watkins, Condon
